Sift in flour, sugar, baking powder and salt that has has been mixed together. Add milk gradually. Beat at low speed for 2 minutes. Add the egg and vanilla, beat thoroughly for one more minute with an ELECTRIC MIXER. Follow the directions for your particular donut machine to make about 10 donuts. NOTE: You can also add your favorite jelly/jam to the batter before baking, or for a surprise, fill a pastry tube with jam and and after you have poured your batter into the donut cavities, CAREFULLY (My emphasis) squeeze a strip of jam or jelly around the center of the batter. Avoid getting too near the inside or outside edges of the cavities. Latch the cover and bake according to directions. The batter will "rise around" the jelly creating a "surprise" inside!
